LENGTH
Length is the distance between two points along a straight line. Length can be measured in mm, cm, m or km.
1 cm = 10 mm
1 m = 100 cm
1 km = 1000 m
MASS
Mass is the amount of matter in an object.Mass can be measured in mg, g, kg or tonne.
1 g = 1000 mg
1 kg = 1000 g
1 tonne/tan = 1000 kg
TIME
Time is the period between two events. Time can be measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, ...
Example :
a) The time spent in school from 7.15 in the morning to 4.40 in the afternoon.
b) The time from the beginning of the school term holidays to the end of the holidays.
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days
1 year = 12 months / 52 weeks / 365 days
1 century = 100 years
1 decade = 10 years
12 hour / 24 hour system
Exercise :
a) journey from your hostel to the class.
b) a football match.
c) singing of the National Anthem during the assembly.
The 12-Hour and the 24-Hour System
The 12 - Hour System
We read and write the times of the day as shown in the table below.
Written Time Read As Meaning 12.30 a.m. twelve thirty or half past twelve thirty minutes past twelve o'clock or thirty minutes to one o'clock 4.15 p.m. four fifteen or quarter past four fifteen minutes past four o'clock or forty-five minutes to five o'clock 10.50 p.m. ten fifty fifty minutes past ten o'clock or ten minutes to eleven o'clock
The 24 - Hour System
We read and write the times of the day as shown in the table below.

| 1400 | fourteen hundred hours | 2.00 p.m. |
| 0415 | zero four fifteen hours | 4.15 a.m. |
